Communication is defined as: 1. an act or instance of transmitting; 2. information communicated, a verbal or written message; 3. a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. ("communication." Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. 2010. Merriam-Webster Online. 21 February 2010 http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/communication) Today, the pastor began his message by telling us about a lunch engagement he had with a friend. He continued describing his observations of the communication taking place in the restaurant. Yes, people were communicating fact-to-face, but way more was going on. People were talking on cell phones, texting, using laptops, ipods, and probably more technology to exchange information. I could not help but think about Sara Kajder, Troy Hicks, Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Kristen Nelson, Lynne Schrum, William Kist and others who have wrapped their arms around the digital information age, met the challenge of the 21st Century Learners, overcame the less than adequate technological resources available in the classroom, and provided their experiences for us to learn from and practice with our students...who also are 21st Century Learners. I worry about the 21st Century Learner who is in a classroom of a teacher who is a 19 and 20th Century Teacher.
